Season Ends In Regional Semi-Final For Lady E-Hawks

FONDA - After a pair of exciting wins in the opening two games of the post-season, Emmetsburg's softball season came to a heartbreaking close Friday night in a 6-3 loss to Manson Northwest Webster in Class 2A Regional Semi-final play. The loss ends the 2014 season for the Lady E-Hawks with a 19-12 mark.

But what was doubly hard for the Lady E-Hawks in the loss was playing without senior third baseman Tegan Olson, who suffered from an appendicitis attack that morning and was left watching the game from the stands.

With Allison Freeman stepping in at third to replace Olson, Emmetsburg drew first blood on Friday as a leadoff walk of Alexa Naig was followed by a single from Sarah Simington. With two runners on base, a strikeout and foul tip gave Emmetsburg two outs, but Bailee Garrelts would rip a double that would allow both Naig and Simington to plate their runs as Garrelts went to third on an error, but would be left waiting when the at-bat ended.

Manson Northwest Webster would get a run back in the bottom after a leadoff double and used an error and passed ball to score the run before stranding two runners after a fielders' choice and a single.

With a 2-0 lead to start the second, Emmetsburg would be retired in order, but returned the favor to the Cougars in their half of the quick inning. The third started with Alexa Naig drawing a walk, but she would be left at third base after a sacrifice and two strikeouts. The Cougars would get three singles and scored one run to tie the game up, but again left two runners waiting in scoring position to end the third frame.

Bailee Garrelts led off the top of the fourth getting on base off a throwing error, but courtesy runner Bailey Naig would be left waiting at third when the Lady E-Hawks were put out in order after that.

The Cougars would go down one out, but then reeled off back-to-back singles and then an error on a bunt and a fielders' choice allowed two runs to score before a walk brought a third run over the plate before two runners were stranded to end the inning.

Now trailing 5-2 at the start of the fifth inning, Emmetsburg got leadoff hitter Ashley Overberg on base off a fielding error. After stealing second and going to third off Alexa Naig's single, Overberg would race home on a passed ball to score, but Naig would be thrown out at third as she tried to steal for the second out and a fly ball would end the opportunity.

Manson NWW would be retired in order in their half of the fifth inning as Emmetsburg came up to bat, hoping for some more magic in the top of the sixth.

The Lady E-Hawks would go down two outs, but Kate Jackson came up with a single, but would be left waiting when the at-bat ended.

The Cougars would go down an out in the bottom of the sixth, but got a single that would come around to score off an RBI?single before the inning ended with a 6-3 lead.

Emmetsburg would lead off the seventh inning with a single from Hali Noll, but Ashley Overber would flyout to the pitcher for the first out. Alexa Naig drew a walk and the two runners moved to scoring position off a sacrifice fly by Sarah Simington, but Michaela Rehm hit into a put out to end the game and the season for the Lady E-Hawks.

Ashton Connelly would be charged with the loss, as she worked six innings and gave up six runs, two earned, off nine hits, with one walk and two strikeouts.

Emmetsburg got a double from Bailee Garrelts, while Alexa Naig, Sarah Simington, Kate Jackson and Hali Noll all added hits for the Lady E-Hawks.
