Several personnel matters were approved during a special work session of the Emmetsburg Community School Board Wednesday, July 9. The meeting also brought the board and its new shared Superintendent's together for a goal-setting session as the new year begins.
The board accepted resignations from Mary Brennan as a paraprofessional at West Elementary and Jared Pickett as the Seventh Grade Track Coach.
The hiring of Darci Farnum of Estherville was approved to fill the vacancy for Middle School and High School Art instructor. Farnum comes to Emmetsburg after several years as art instructor in the Graettinger-Terril Community School District.
Several Coaching positions were also filled by the board, starting with Brittany Peterson as Eighth Grade Girls Basketball coach and Mike Dunlap as Seventh Grade Boys Basketball coach. April Moffitt was named the Winter Sports Cheer Coach and Julie Bird was named the Fall Sports Cheer Coach. Jared Pickett was named Eighth Grade Track Coach and Jeremy Ziegler was named the Seventh Grade Track Coach. All the hirings were approved on a unanimous vote of the board.
Also approved were Rick Jones, Marc Riley, Bruce Nelson and Jonathan Werstein as volunteer Football Coaches and Nate Kenne as a volunteer Cross Country coach.
In their opening remarks to the board, Superintendents Gary Richardson and Amanda Schmidt both expressed their excitement about the upcoming school year in Emmetsburg.
"It really is a privilege to be here and working in Emmetsburg,"?Richardson said. "And, with Amanda, I think it is going to go very well. It's not going to be perfect, but we will come up with answers to questions and issues as we go."
"I'm very happy to be back,"?Schmidt said, referring to her start as an educator in the district eight years earlier. " We certainly have changed and grown in eight years and I'm excited to do the work to keep growing. I'm looking forward to working with Gary , along with Mike, Tracie and Joe for the coming year."
With search consultant Jeff Herzberg acting as facilitator, the board and the new administrators worked on developing goals for the coming year.. Better all-around communication was identified as one of the keys areas of emphasis for the coming year.
A better understanding of the chain of command was also discussed, along with understanding of duties.
Richardson explained he felt his duties would be primarily to work with District Business Manager Lisa Chapman on the budgets and finances for the district, along with negotiations, board relations, staffings, hirings, legislative issues. Richardson also noted that networking with other districts and meeting with the district's administrative team weekly would be his primary focus.
"I will be working with the building principals and staff, working on Professional Development, working with the District Leadership Team and Building Leadership Teams, and the one-to-one program vision and implementation,"?Schmidt said. "I will work with the educational leadership for the district, and since I'm closest, I'll be making the snow day determinations. I'm sure things will come up, but we'll deal with them as they do come up."
