Lady E-Hawks Survive Late Rally Attempt

June 26, 2014
by Dan Voigt , Emmetsburg News

Despite a four-run rally by Algona in the sixth inning, Emmetsburg's Lady E-Hawks held on to earn a 9-6 win over Algona in a non-conference softball matchup Tuesday night in Emmetsburg.

Algona would get a quick run in the first inning, using a pair of base hits to do the damage, while Emmetsburg would strand Tegan Olson after her base hit to end the first inning.

Algona would be retired in order by the Lady E-Hawk defense in the top of the second inning, and Emmetsburg would come up to bat. A quick put out started the at-bat, but back-to-back singles from Bailee Garrelts and Kate Jackson got things rolling, as with two outs, Ashley Overberg rapped out a sharp base hit to right center field that scored both courtesy runner Natalie Kliegl and Kate Jackson to give Emmetsburg the 2-1 lead when the inning ended.

Emmetsburg pitcher Hali Noll got a strikeout to start the third inning, but Algona would get a pair of singles with two out, only to end the at-bat on a fielders' choice. But, the Lady E-Hawks would fare no better, going down two outs before Michaela Rehm singled, only to be left waiting when the inning ended.

The Bulldogs would got a leadoff single in the top of the fourth, and would draw a walk, but left both the runners stranded when the opportunity ended. However, Emmetsburg would be retired in order to end the fourth inning.

In the top of the fifth, Algona tied the score up with a leadoff double and a single before a sacrifice fly scored the run. A second base hit would be tallied to right field, but the Bulldogs' attempt to score a run was gunned down as right fielder Ashley Overberg rifled the ball back in to catcher Bailee Garrelts for the put out at the plate. The at-bat ended with an infield fly to pitcher Hali Noll.

With the score knotted at 2-2, Emmetsburg came up in the bottom of the second inning and got a leadoff single from Ashley Overberg. Alexa Naig was walked before an error put Sarah Simington on base to load the sacks.

A sacrifice fly by Tegan Olson allowed Overberg and Naig to score their runs and an RBI?single from Michaela Rehm brought Simington over the plate before the inning ended for a 5-2 advantage.

Trailing by three runs in the top of the sixth, Algona got a leadoff single before a strikeout, and then came up with back-to-back singles to plate one run. A fly ball to left gave Algona two outs, but a walk and a double would score three runs for the Bulldogs, allowing them to re-take the lead, 6-5, with two outs.

A pitching change would ensue, with Ashton Connelly coming to the circle and Hali Noll taking over at first base. An Algona runner would get on base off an error, but a strikeout would end the threat.

Now trailing by a run in the bottom of the sixth, Emmetsburg wasted little time in answering the Bulldogs' effort.

Kate Jackson led off by pounding out a standing double to right center field, and Jenna Chapman would draw a walk as Jackson went to third on a passed ball. A put out of Ashley Overberg at first would move Chapman to second, but a single by Alexa Naig brought Jackson home to tie the game at 6-6.

An infield fly out by Sarah Simington put Emmetsburg down two outs with runners at third and second, but Tegan Olson would step up to the plate and took the first pitch, sending a rocket over the left field fence for a three-run home run shot.

The inning would end when Michaela Rehm was put out on the next at-bat, but the momentum now belonged to Emmetsburg.

Trailing by three runs in the top of the seventh, Algona got a leadoff single, but left the runner waiting at third as the defense would put the game away for the 9-6 Emmetsburg victory.

Hali Noll would go five and a third innings, giving up six runs, all earned, off 12 hits, with three strikeouts and two walks. Ashton Connelly would relieve for an inning and a third, giving up one hit and tallying one strikeout.

Emmetsburg was led by the home run and single from Tegan Olson, while Kate Jackson had a double and single. Michaela Rehm and Ashely Overberg both had two hits, while Alexa Naig and Bailee Garrelts both came away with base hits in the winning effort.
