Emmetsburg's E-Hawks outlasted a late rally attempt by the LeMars Bulldogs Monday night to claim an 8-6 Lakes Conference victory. the win propelled Coach Mike Brennan's ball club to a 3-4 mark in the Lakes and was also Brennan's 315th coaching victory.
LeMars would score a run in the first, but the E-Hawks would answer with a three-run home run shot by Zach Anderson that also scored Dillon VanOosbree and Aaron Bird for a 3-1 lead after the first inning. In the second, LeMars would strand two runners, but the E-Hawks got three runs as Joe Jackson, Dillon VanOosbree and Aaron Bird all scored for a 6-1 advantage.
LeMars continued to struggle in the third and the E-Hawks put two runs on the scoreboard when Jacob Kibbie scored off an error and Joe Jackson came home for an 8-1 advantage.
The Bulldogs would get a run in the top of the fourth and the E-Hawks would be retired in order. Another run would be scored by LeMars in the top of the fifth frame and Emmetsburg would strand a runner for a 3-8 score.
In the top of the sixth, LeMars would go down two quick outs, but were able to push two runs over the plate to cut Emmetsburg's lead to 8-5 as the E-Hawks went down in order.
The top of the seventh saw LeMars get a run over the plate, but good defense would provide a thrilling end to the game in the form of a throw from left fielder Greg Wesley to catcher Zach Anderson at home plate for the final out.
Greg Wesley pitched three innings, giving up two earned runs off one hit with six walks and a strikeout. Dillon VanOosbree got the save in four innings with four runs off five hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
Zach Anderson had a home run, while Dillon VanOosbree, Aaron Bird and Joe Jackson all had two hits and Jake Kibbie had a hit.
