June 26, 2014
Emmetsburg News

Palo Alto County will host world renowned opera singer, Simon Estes, on Sunday, Nov. 16, at 7 p.m. at the Emmetsburg High School Auditorium. An informal talk, followed by a question/answer session for 5-12 students and the general public will be presented by Dr. Estes on Monday, Nov. 17, 9:30 a.m. at Iowa Lakes Community College, Emmetsburg.

Simon Estes is a native of Centerville and an alumni of the University of Iowa. For four decades he performed over 100 roles in major opera companies around the world; he sang for six presidents; and for Nobel Laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu. He is currently on staff at Iowa State University and Wartburg College.

The "Roots and Wings" Concerts are a tour of Iowa's 99 counties featuring Simon Estes and local choirs. Dr. Estes will perform familiar selections from Broadway and opera as well as inspirational songs and spirituals.

The Iowa Lakes Community College Chamber Choir, Emmetsburg High School Concert Choir and singers from West Bend-Mallard and Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire will be performing on the concert.

The "Roots and Wings" concert tour is designed to raise funds for the Simon Estes Foundation. Simon Estes contributes 50% of his fee from these concerts to the Simon Estes Foundation to support college scholarships for high school seniors in each county. A grant of $6,250 by the Palo Alto County Gaming Development Corporation will fund a good portion of this project with ticket sales and donations by area businesses and organizations providing the remaining funds.

Music boosters from Emmetsburg, West Bend-Mallard, Ruthven-Ayrshire and Graettinger-Terril will be asking for your support in the coming weeks. For further information or to listen to Simon Estes sing, please visit:
