Charles L. Nelson 1925-2014

A Mass of Christian Burial for Charles L. Nelson of Emmetsburg will be 10:30 a.m. today, Tuesday, June 24, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg.

Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. The Joyce Funeral Home in Emmetsburg is in charge of arrangements.

Charles LeRoy Nelson was born April 21, 1925, in Litchfield, NE, the son of William and Blanche (Bradley) Nelson. He received his education in a country school in Nebraska and graduated from Mason City, NE in 1942. He, with his parents and sister, Ida, moved to a farm near Emmetsburg in that same year.

Charles was united in marriage to Edna K. Conway, daughter of Leo and Nellie Conway, on Oct. 9, 1950 at Assumption Catholic Church. To this union eight children were born.

They lived and farmed north of Emmetsburg for 37 years and then moved to an acreage west of town in 1987. Chuck loved his family. He especially enjoyed the great outdoors, working with the livestock and his pets. He planted many trees during his lifetime and received a certificate from the State Arbor Day Foundation.

Chuck was a member of Assumption Catholic Church, the Cattlemen's Association, Pork Producers and he worked with his children in their 4-H projects. He served as a trustee for Emmetsburg Township for many years and was a great community man.

Charles died Friday, June 20, 2014 at PARC Hall in Emmetsburg, at the age of 89.

Survivors are his children, Dick and Anne Marie Nelson of Emmetsburg; LuAnn and Dan O'Brien of Emmetsburg; William and Mary Nelson of Choctaw, OK; Chuck Nelson and Kelly McCool of Ames; Jim and Diane Nelson of Emmetsburg; Janet and David Klein of Hospers; John and Carol Nelson of Ames; Steve and Maria Nelson of Palo; one sister, Ida Mae Joosten of Council Bluffs; and his 24 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.

Charles Nelson was preceded in death by his wife, Edna; his parents; and a grandson, Danny.
