June Garden of the Month

June 19, 2014
Emmetsburg News
The June Garden of the Month is tended by Libby Laubenthal and her grandchildren, Ali and Alex Laubenthal. The garden is located at 2207 18th Street.
Libby established the garden about five years ago, transplanting many of the plants from her former home. Black-eyed Susan planted five years ago just came up again this year. Other plants have been shared by family and friends. Perennials are combined with annuals, providing color all around the corner lot.
Beds of hosta enjoy the shade and shasta daisies enjoy the sun. Walk around the yard to see peonies bushes still in bloom, hydrangea, four varieties of day lilies, delphinium, purple and white iris, echinacea, columbine and yarrow. Creeping sedum holds the soil banks. Ali has planted a cutting bed our by the vegetable garden.
Tomatoes, peppers and a variety of vegetables, including cucumber, dill and summer squash, are growing, along with a variety of chives. Society garlic has a nice bloom. The herb garden includes sage, thyme, basil and two kinds of parsley, plus tarragon and a half-dozen kinds of mint.
