Action Begins At Emmetsburg Raceway

A total of 26 drivers and carts showed up to do battle on May 25th at Emmetsburg Raceway for the Picray Welding and Fabricating season opener. Cloudy overcast conditions prevailed till part way through the first flight of heats when the sun came out and sucked the moisture out of surface. The track crew scrambled to add water and by features time the track came in and offered some great racing.

Action started with nine putt putts, which were split up into two features as the 51 of Ethan Dirks of Belmond held on for first feature win of the day. In the second feature, Donivan Christensen of Garner prevailed for his first win of the season in Emmetsburg. The heat races were also won by Ethan Dirks and Donivan Christensen. These young racers ages 5-7 put on a great show of ability for their age.

Rolling onto the oval next was the Rookie Class, where Dylan Wickman of Bancroft held on for the win over Sam Schmitt of Wall Lake and Jackson Moraz of Waverly, who rounded out the top three. Rookie Class heat race winner Jess Bieret of Wall Lake dropped out of in the feature. Dylan Wickman earned the other heat win in the class.

In the Jr. 1 class, Carson Gunnerson of Peterson picked up both heat wins over Joseph Bonnstetter of Cylinder. When Feature time came up, Joseph Bonnstetter was able to pick up feature win number 14 in Emmetsburg for his career. An exciting battle for second took place between Weston Long of Cylinder and Jake Paysen of Wall Lake, as the duo ran nose to tail and side by side for 12 laps before Long edged Paysen at the finish, with Aiden Strube of Estherville finishing fourth. Carson Gunnerson experienced mechanical problems in the Feature and dropped out to finish in fifth.

The last feature of the day had four classes represented in an Open-Type class with Trey Herrig of Peterson winning Jr. 2 over Rebeccca Bonnstetter of Cylinder. They split their heat races with a win each. Brian Nellis of Fort Dodge won the Adult Clone class while Nathan McKeever of Sac City was the winner in Adult Modifieds. In the Adult Animal class, Michael Wetherell of Cleghorn won over Sara Dirks of Belmond.

The next race is June 8th and will be sponsored by racing action.NAPA Auto Parts of Emmetsburg. Hot Laps start at 12:30 p.m. with racing action to follow. Emmetsburg Raceway is located at the Palo Alto County Fairgrounds. Admission is free for spectators and concessions are available at the track. The public is invited to come out and enjoy the racing action.
