After interviewing four candidates a week earlier and making an offer to one candidate, the Emmetsburg Community School Board has changed course in its search for a new Superintendent. The announcement of plans to hire an interim leader for the district were announced Thursday, Many 22, in a memo issued by school board President BJ Schany.
"After careful consideration, the School Board has decided to seek an interim Superintendent for the 2014-15 school year. We want to make sure we are hiring the person that is the best fit for our district so we are going to take the time to do just that," Schany stated in the memo.
The school board's change in course came about after the board's initial choice, Bryon Darnall, declined the offer of employment on Monday, May 19. At that point, the board planned to hold a second interview with candidates Jon Wiebers and Sharon Dentlinger on Wednesday, May21, prior to the regular monthly board meeting.
However, late Tuesday, May 20, the board's search consultant, Jeff Herzog receiving a message from Wiebers indicating that wished to withdraw from consideration for the position. The second interview meeting was cancelled, and the board met in closed session Wednesday afternoon, May 21, to discuss its options in light of the developments during the week. In that closed session, the board arrived at a consensus to continue searching for a new superintendent, with the interim administrator as an option.
The next task facing the board of education is finding a new high school principal to replace Fred Matlage, who resigned in late April. Jeff Herzberg, who headed up the search for a superintendent, has agreed to assist with the search for a principal, and had reported 30 applicants for the position in a report to the board on May 14.
"We will be proceeding with the high school principal search and hiring this position within the next two weeks," Schany noted his memo to district staff and the media. "As we make progress on the Interim Superintendent position we will keep you informed and may have a meet and greet session as soon as possible for you to meet the new Superintendent and High School Principal."
The interim Superintendent will need to be in place by July 1 to take over for Superintendent John Joynt, who elected to take advantage of the district's early-retirement program this year, and will leave his position on June 30.
"Thank you for your patience with us at this time as well as for all who helped with the interview process to this point," Schany said. "We know this may be difficult to understand but please know that we are working to find the best possible situation for the students, staff and community members in the Emmetsburg Community School District."
