SPENCER - Emmetsburg's E-Hawks battled Spencer neck-and-neck down the final holes but came up two strokes short in their bid for the Lakes Conference Tournament title Monday. Spencer would win with a 326, while the E-Hawks carded a 328 for the runner up honors on a gloomy, cold, wet day.
The bright spot of the outing was Emmetsburg's Michael Pugh, who captured the Tournament Medalist crown with his 76, which also earned him All Conference honors. Senior teammate Mike Myers would battle to earn a fifth place finish with a 79, which also earned him All Conference recognition.
Emmetsburg would get solid efforts from Lane VerMulm, who turned in a solid score of 86, while Luke Jackson shot an 87. Clayton Freeman would come away with a 90 and Brian Merrill rounded out the effort with his round of 97.

"The E-Hawks played hard during a less than perfect day at Spencer,"?noted E-Hawk Head Coach Kort Freeman, "The weather was cold and rainy and the only two events in the Lakes Conference that weren't cancelled Monday were the conference golf tournaments, so that tells you how bad the weather really was."
Freeman continued, "Once again, Mike and Mike led the way, but we cam up just short of bringing home the championship. We have a good team and we have the ability to finish these tournaments off. We just need to gian the mental strength to fight and find a way to get the ball in the hole."
Freeman paused. "I'm very proud of Pugh and Myers. They have led this team for four years and it was fitting for them to finish off their Lakes Conference careers with another All Lakes Conference Team honor. I don't remember the last time that Emmetsburg the Lakes Conference Tournament Individual Champion, so that is one heck of an accomplishment.
The E-Hawks have little time to reflect on the accomplishment as they begin Sectional Tournament play this Friday, at Emerald Hills at Arnolds Park.
