After a tough start to their week, the Emmetsburg boys golf team rebounded with a win at Cherokee on Tuesday, May 6. Mike Myers and Michael Pugh continue their march through the regular season with Myers capturing Medalist honors with his round of 38 and Pugh earning the Runner-up honors by carding a round of 39. Rounding out the E-Hawk scores were Clayton Freeman with a round of 44 and Luke Jackson shooting a 45, Lane VerMulm carded a round of 46, and Brian Merrill rounded out the effort with a 51.
"We showed some improvement on a difficult Cherokee course in 25 to 30 mile an hour winds," noted E-Hawk Coach Kort Freeman. "We were able to eliminate the big numbers off the score cards. You can make a lot of bogeys and shoot a decent round of golf, it is the doubles, triples, and bigger that add up way too fast to be a Varsity golf squad."
Emmetsburg's Junior Varsity boys also played on Tuesday, but finished third behind LeMars and Cherokee. Emmetsburg would shoot a 248, while LeMars shot a 177 and Cherokee carded a 197.
Matt Kibbie and Nate Schiek both carded rounds of 55, while Tanner Lundgren turned in a round of 65. Chris VanHeuvelen shot a 73, while Zach Doidge carded a 74 and Will Schany shot a 75.
After their final Lakes Conference triangular on Friday with Estherville Lincoln Central and Western Christian, the boys closed out the regular season on Monday with the Lakes Conference Tournament at the Spencer Golf and Country Club. Friday, the E-Hawks travel to Arnolds Park to play in Class 2A Sectional Tournament action at Emerald Hills Golf Course.
