More Food Needed In The Future?

May 1, 2014
Emmetsburg News

To the Editor:

Last February I wrote a small editorial, more like a notice, of a speaker to be at Alexandria, MN, stating that he is growing his corn for $1.24 cost per bushel.

Last summer a trucker came to Emmetsburg stating the very fact, that we will need more food. There is/was nothing wrong with making everyone aware of that. They have a good phrase, "By 2050 we will need 70% more food." That is only 35 years away.

That speaker at Alexandria last winter farms in the Bismark, ND area. Not corn country. His yield 127 bu per acre; their county aveage like maybe 90 bu.

He purchased that farm less than 25 years ago and at that time his cow-calf unit was 100-150. Two year ago that number was 350-400 units. Also, he would summer pasture 300-600 yearlings. Some he would finish on grass.

Also he had some sheep, and a flock of pastured laying hens. What percent of food increase did he have in lesl than 25 years?

I think it was in the early nineties an individual had some different ideas on raising corn. He wrote a couple of books about it that are available. Then he started experimenting, but before he could take it to a farm he died in 1998. His co-workers found some help and they took it to a farm here in Iowa. Result:?for the last 10 or 12 years, year in and year out, they have been harvesting 400 bu corn per acre. Their goal: 500 bu corn and 200 bu beans. What percent of increase over the 160 bu corn average per acre for the state of Iowa is that?

These two farms have one thing in common. They pay attention to the health of the little creatures that live in the top 5 to 6 inches of their soil. It is estimated that in one small hand full of healthy soil there are 600 million to one billion of them little ones.

And He saw that it was good.
