A chain-reaction collision over the noon-hour on Tuesday, April 22, sent three people to area hospitals win injuries. The accident occurred in a work zone in the 3800 block of U.S. Highway 18, between Emmetsburg and Ruthven.
According to Palo Alto County Sheriff Lynn Schultes, a 2011 Honda CRV, driven by 70-year old Quentin Francis Reifenrath of Milford was slowing to stop for the upcoming construction zone when a 2005 Chevy Uplander van, driven by 50-year old Brent Alan Terhark of Hull, failed to slow for the line of vehicles waiting to enter the construction zone. The Terhark van rear-ended the Reifenrath vehicle without slowing down, which sent Reifenrath's vehicle into the rear of slowing/stopped 2005 International semi tractor-trailer rig driven by 58-year of andrew Verne Barnes of Emmetsburg.
Brent Terhark and the passenger in his vehicle were transported by Ruthven and Graettinger Ambulances to the Palo Alto County Hospital, while Reifenrath was transported by Spencer
WORK ZONE COLLISION - A three vehicle collision Tuesday afternoon between Emmetsburg and Ruthven sent three people to hospitals. The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s office says a van, left, driven by Brent Terhark failed to slow for a line of vehicles waiting to enter a construction area and rear-ended the vehicle at right, driven by Quentin Reifenrath of Milford, which then struck a stopped semi driven by Andrew Barnes of Emmetsburg. Terhark and a passenger were transported to the Palo Alto County Hospital by ambulance and Reifenrath was transported to Spencer Municipal Hospital by SpencerAmbulance. Ambulance to the Spencer Municipal Hospital. No report on injuries was available for any of the victims. Barnes did not report any injuries to authorities at the scene.
Damages were estimated at $15,000 to Reifenrath's 2011 Honda, while damages to Terhark's 2005 Chevrolet were estimated at $10,000. Damage to the 2005 International semi driven by Barnes were estimated at $1,000.
The Iowa State Patrol, Ruthven Fire Department, Ruthven Ambulance, Graettinger Ambulance, Spencer Ambulance and Emmetsburg Ambulancesall assisted the Palo Alto ?County Sheriff's Office at the accident scene.
The accident remains under investigation by the Palo Alto County Sheriff's Office.
