The Emmetsburg E-Hawk boys golf team returns five letterwinners for the upcoming season, which begins this Friday at Spring Valley in a triangular with Bishop Garrigan and Spencer.
Leading the E-Hawks is senior Mike Myers, a Second Team All State player and First Team All State Tournament Team member from last season, as well as an All Lakes Conference honoree. After finishing fifth at state last year, Myers will provide the leadership on the links for the E-Hawks.
Also returning is senior Michael Pugh, A First Team All State player and two-time All Lakes Conference honoree.
Other letterwinners include Luke Jackson, a two-time letterwinner, Clayton Freeman and Lane VerMulm.
Senior Brian Merrill will step up to the varsity ranks this season, along with Nate Schiek.
There are seven new players joining the ranks of Coach Kort Freeman's squad this season, starting with sophomores Garrett
Berkland and Chris VanHeuvelen. Freshman seeing action for the first time include Tanner Lundgren, Matt Kibbie, Will
Schany, Kyler Hofer and Zachary Doidge.
"I look for these young men to step up and take an interest in becoming leaders on our golf team for the years to come," noted Coach Freeman.
After Friday's opener, the E-Hawks play Monday at Humboldt, so Freeman knows the season will start quickly. "Out of the gate we are going to figure out if we are the real deal or not. I have a lot of confidence in this team and believe that they can be as good as they want to be. They will need to keep in mind what the end goal is and work towards that every day."
