WEST?BEND - The Lady Wolverines of West Bend-Mallard/Gilmore City-Bradgate opened the track and field season Monday night at the Ryan Relays at Gowrie. The Lady Wolverines would finish fourth overall, with the host Prairie Valley squad winning the event.
With just nine girls competing on Monday and a strong northerly wind factoring into performances, the Lady Wolverines gave an admirable performance, picking up a trio of First Place finishes.
Madelyn Gehrt took first in the 400 meter dash with a time of :65.47, and Anna Zaugg won the 1500 meter run with a tie of 5:41.56.
Also claiming first place was the Distance Medley Relay squad, comprised of Harrison Schmidt, Portlind Schmidt, Ashley Schmidt and Anna Zaugg, as the quartet won with a time of 4:48.72.
In the 3000 meters, Lauren Thatcher placed second with a time of 13:00.37. The Lady Wolverines' Sprint Medley, made up of Lauren Link, Harrison Schmidt, Ashley Schmidt and Madelyn Gehrt took second with a 2:02.86 clocking and the 4x100 relay, made up of Lauren Link, Liz Gehrt, Portlind Schmidt and Harrison Schmidt, also finished second with a :56.94 effort.
Lauren Link would finish fifth in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of :19.4, while Taylor Fogarty finished fifth in the 800 meter run with a 3:00.41 clocking. Rounding out the placings for West Bend-Mallard /Gilmore City-Bradgate was the 4x200 relay, as the quartet of Liz Gehrt, Taylor Fogarty, Lauren Thatcher and Harrison Schmidt finished fifth with a time of 2:11.44.
"I?felt we did well scoring 60 points,"?noted WBM /GCB Head Coach Eldon McKimmey. "Our younger girls handled their first meet real well. Now that they know what to expect, I?look for rapid improvement out of them."
McKimmey continued, "We must find some field event points before our team standings will improve. Madelyn Gehrt ran a couple of great 400's and Anna Zaugg was very strong in her 800 and 1500."
