NEWELL -- Linda Helmke, age 64, of Newell, formerly of Storm Lake, died Saturday, March 15, 2014 at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.
Memorial services were held Wednesday, March 19, at the Emmetsburg Care Center in the family room. Burial will be at a later date. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell is in charge of the arrangements.
Linda Sue Helmke was born Aug. 26, 1949 in Rolfe, daughter of Marvin and Iona Helmke. Growing up, she attended school in Rolfe where she graduated in 1967.
After graduation, Linda attended Iowa Central Community College for two years. She then went on to Buena Vista College where she received her Bachelor's of Arts Degree in music. Linda was also active in a sorority.
While attending Buena Vista College, Linda met and fell in love with Jeffrey Thomas. They had their first date on Halloween. Linda and Jeffrey would be fortunate enough to spend the next 44 years together, not only as friends, but partners in life.
Linda loved to collect cookie jars; gathering over 600 throughout her life. She and Jeffrey enjoyed traveling across the United States together on their motorcycle. Linda had a great love for music which she passed on to her nieces. Linda also was an animal lover.
Most of all, Linda loved spending time with her family and friends. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Those left to cherish her memory include her life-long partner, Jeffrey Thomas of Newell; mother, Iona Helmke of Emmetsburg; nieces: Kim (Tim) Kerr of Cylinder and their children, Adam and Arik; Tracey Henderson of Emmetsburg and her children, Tyler, Cody, and Clayton; sister-in-law, Gig (Steve) Streeter of Lake City; brother-in-law, John Lubinus of Pocahontas; extended family and friends.
Linda was preceded in death by her father, Marvin; and sister, Judy Lubinus
