To Whom it May Concern:
I am deeply saddened to learn about the proposed Music Program cuts for the 2014-2015 school year. Since I moved back to Emmetsburg in 2006, I have seen cuts in Title 1, Reading Recovery, and now it appears the Music Program is on the chopping block. Unless it is anticipated there will be a substantial decline in enrollment, it seems prudent to replace all of the retiring Music Teachers. It will be hard to replace the veteran teachers who have built up such an outstanding program and keep up the same level of excellence, if the number of instructors is reduced.
I understand that in order to balance the budget, you often have to make cuts. However, I think there are other areas which could be considered without harming the Music Program.
Another consideration is open enrollment. Parents consider the school where their children will get the best well-rounded education. The strong sports and music programs in the Emmetsburg Community School can often be the deciding factor in whether or not to attend school here.
I would like to urge parents, grandparents, and other interested persons in the community to voice their opinions. Wednesday, March 19, is the date set for the public hearing on the budget, and would be an appropriate time, if you are interested in this issue.
