EHS Pops Concert This Weekend

March 11, 2014
Emmetsburg News

The Emmetsburg High School Vocal Music Department will present their 2014 Pops Concert this Friday, March 14 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, March 16 at 2 p.m. in the high school gym.

The Pops Concert features the performances of the Concert Choir, the Mixed Chorus, the J.V. and Varsity Show Choirs, and many small ensembles and soloists in the performance of "Pop" music from the 1950's to the 21st Century.

The weekend of the St. Patricks Day celebration is a new date for the Pops Concert. The Iowa State Athletic, Speech and Music Associations bumped back all their state sponsored events one week this year due to the calendar shift. Essentially, this took the usual Pops Concert weekend in May and moved it onto graduation so a new date was needed.

"The St. Pats weekend may be a really great time for the Pops Concert", noted Vocal Music Director Dave Fog. "Many visitors and family members are in town, and the Pops Concert should make a really nice evening or afternoon of entertainment for those who would like something special to do on our communities' big celebration."

Reserved seat tickets at the candle-light tables may be purchased at the high school office from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Reserved seat table seating has been available at the door for the past couple of years, but the public is urged to buy reserved table seating tickets in advance in the event of a sellout. Reserved table seating features snacks and refreshments throughout the evening performances.

General Admission seating for the bleachers may be purchased in advance or at the door one hour before each performance. Plenty of general admission seating is usually available for both evenings.

"Open Up the Sky" is the theme of the 2014 Pops Concert. The theme is especially appropriate for this group of EHS musicians, as the "sky has been the limit" so far this year.

The essence of the evening is the varied performances by the EHS vocalists. Musical selections will vary from then novelty numbers to the teen pop, from doo-wop acapella to jazz, country, and from beautiful ballad to driving rock.

The EHS Show Choirs, "High Voltage" and "Black and Gold" will perform their award winning shows from the past year. Vocal ensembles have prepared selections ranging from the 60's to country to show tunes to hard rock.

"Our musicians have selected a lot of really fantastic music once again this year. It amazes me that they choose such a variety and enjoy so many styles. There is really something for everyone again this year, and a lot of fun numbers that are crowd pleasers," Fog noted. "The Pops Concert has become a highlight for the students and the community over the years and we have such a great bunch of students who are working very hard to present their very best! This group of students has shown all year that they are first class performers and their success has shown that they will put on a great show for everyone this weekend."

Fog continued, "Every year I have out of town guests who come to visit after the concert and they are absolutely amazed. Hopefully our parents and community will continue to attend and support the kids who have shown so much dedication to doing their best all year."

All proceeds from ticket sales go to support the classroom expense of the vocal music department. Pops Concert ticket sales pay for classroom music, contest entries, awards, Pops Concert decorations, accompanist fees and all other expenses of the vocal music department, which serves the 135 students involved in the program. The publics' attendance at the schools concerts definitely does support music in our schools!

"Make plans to attend "Open Up the Sky" - and take in a live performance Pops weekend!
