Police Issue New Phone Scam Alert

March 11, 2014
Emmetsburg News

The Emmetsburg Police Department is warning area residents of a new scam that is circulating around the country.

According to Emmetsburg Police Chief Eric Hanson, Emmetsburg Police have recently taken several reports of a new scam circulating in the area in which a caller will state that they are a representative of Microsoft Corporation. They will then misrepresent their intentions of assisting the potential victim with either updating or "fixing" a problem on the victim's computer. After the update or "repairs" are completed, the caller then requests the victim's credit card or debit card information to pay for the "repair service."

After checking with Microsoft Corporation, Police reiterate that Microsoft Corporation will not contact an individual by phone, nor will they request credit card or debit card information over the phone.

"The Emmetsburg Police Department is reminding everyone that if they have questions about scams, they can feel free to contact the Emmetsburg Police Department, the Palo Alto County Sheriff's Office or their local law enforcement agency for more information," noted Chief Hanson.
