A two-vehicle head-on collision south of Emmetsburg Tuesday morning claimed the life of an Ayrshire woman and injured an Emmetsburg woman. Troopers of the Iowa State Patrol identified the victim of the crash as 84-year old Mary Catherine Gappa of Ayrshire.
According to the Iowa State Patrol's preliminary accident report, the collision occurred at 10:42 a.m. Tuesday, March 4, one-half mile north of the intersection of Palo Alto County Road B53 and Iowa Highway Four, south of Emmetsburg.
A 2009 Ford Escape, being driven by 80-year old Marvella Ann Hurley of Emmetsburg, was northbound on Highway Four just north of county road B53 when it crossed the center line of the highway. As the Hurley vehicle was traveling north in the southbound lane, it hit a 2001 Ford Windstar van being driven by 84-year old Mary Catherine Gappa of Ayrshire, who was southbound in the southbound lane of Highway Four.
Following the collision, the Hurley vehicle spun around and came to rest facing south in the middle of the highway while the Gappa vehicle was pushed back and came to rest in the west ditch of Highway Four.
Both Hurley and Gappa were transported by ambulance to the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg.
Following the collision, Highway Four was closed to traffic for a time while troopers conducted their preliminary investigation and the vehicles were removed from the accident scene.
The accident remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.
The Palo Alto County Sheriff's Office, along with Emmetsburg Fire Department and Emmetsburg Ambulance Service personnel all assisted the Iowa State Patrol at the accident scene.
