The Emmetsburg "Extravaganza" will be the largest in the history of the event, as well as the largest in the state of Iowa during the 2014 Show Choir season. The competing groups include six class 4A groups, five 3A groups, seven 2A schools, ten vocal jazz groups, two 1A choirs, three middle school show choirs and seven prep show choirs, which will all perform during the day's opening round. Over 1,800 performers will fill the hallways at the high school during the day.
As groups arrive, Emmetsburg vocal music student hosts greet and escort them to a homeroom decorated and supervised by the student hosts. Additionally, EHS students also run all the technical aspects of the contest, including running the sound system, lighting, serving as judge hosts and tabulating scores, checking hand stamps at the door and working in the concessions stand. Over 130 EHS vocal students will help out at some time during the day.
The Emmetsburg Vocal Music Booster parents group organize the food service for the task of providing food for the visiting show choir members, as well as parents and interested spectators who turn out to see the performances. Parents help out by supervising the hallways, warm-up rooms and serving food in the kitchen. Parents not working during the contest provide food items to the effort.
All parents of the EHS vocal students contribute in some way to help the Vocal Department in what has turned into the department's major fundraising activity of the school year.
The public is invited and encouraged to attend the "Extravaganza" Invitational for all or part of the day. A one time admission fee will be charged which allows access to the performances at any time during the day along with the evening finals competition. Food is provided at the student center all day long, with an evening pasta dinner, which will begin serving at 4:00 p.m.
The public is invited to stop by the Emmetsburg High School gym and auditorium this Saturday to not only support the EHS musicians, but also to experience the excitement and musical energy of some of the finest show choirs in the tri-state region.
