Ann M. Gales has been appointed as a district associate court judge of the Third Judicial District by the district court judges of the 3A judicial election sub-district. She was appointed to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of District Associate Judge Donald J. Bormann. Judge-elect Gales will be sworn-in at a public ceremony on February 21st, 2014 at 3:00 pm at the Kossuth County Courthouse. A public reception will be held at the Kossuth County Courthouse following the ceremony. Friends and family are invited to join the court as we celebrate the investiture of Ann Gales.
District Associate judges have the jurisdiction of judicial magistrates plus authority to hear serious and aggravated misdemeanor cases, civil suits in which the amount in controversy is $10,000 or less, and juvenile cases when the judge is sitting as a juvenile judge. District associate judges are appointed by the district judges of the judicial district from a slate of nominees screened and selected by the county magistrate appointing commission. Their term is six years.
Ann Gales earned a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Notre Dame in Indiana and a law degree from Duke University School of Law in North Carolina. She practiced law in Chicago for the U.S. Department of Justice, Antitrust Division before moving to Kossuth County, Iowa and serving as an assistant county attorney for several years. Ann started working as a sole practitioner in Algona in 2007 and continued in that work until her appointment to the bench.
Ann and her husband, Joe Illg, have three children and live on a farm in southern Kossuth County near St. Joe.
