Thomas "Tom" Fogarty, age 55, of Emmetsburg, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, at his home in Emmetsburg.
A Remembrance Service was held Saturday, Feb. 1, at the Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg.
Tom was born on March 21, 1958 to Terrance "Ike" and Bridget Fogarty in Emmetsburg. He was preceded in death by his parents in 2012. He is survived by his partner in life and love, Darcy Kanagy; Teegray Fogarty, his feline friend; and six siblings: Mike (Carol), Emmetsburg, John (Holly), Spencer, Jill (Kevin) Hanson, Graettinger, Jim, Phoenix, AZ, Bill, Wichita, KS, Joe (Tina), Chicago, IL; along with several nieces and nephews.
Tom graduated from Emmetsburg High School in 1976 where he was a multi-sport star, participating in football, basketball, track and baseball. He then went on to Iowa Lakes Community College where he received his Associates Degree, and then on to William Penn College where he starred in basketball and received his Bachelor degree in Physical Education in 1980.
Tom then began his teaching/coaching career in South Clay, where he spent four years. He couldn't get the love of basketball and competition out of his head, so he attended many tryouts for the CBL (Continental Basketball League). He was able to land a contract playing overseas and traveled many places, playing and coaching over the next 17 years (South America, Middle East, Europe and Africa).
Tom came back home in 2001 to help out and to run the family business. He continued to work and run the station, while also refereeing basketball, baseball, softball and volleyball.
In 2006, Tom became a security guard at the Wild Rose Casino, a job he loved.
