Lady E-Hawks Down Storm Lake

January 30, 2014

STORM?LAKE - It wasn't a thing of great beauty but Emmetsburg's Lady E-Hawks came up with a 40-19 win over Storm Lake in basketball action Tuesday night. The turnover-laden contest gave Emmetsburg a 9-6 mark overall and 7-3 mark in the Lakes Conference as they prepare to host Western Christian this Friday evening at home.

After a tough loss to Spencer last Friday, the Lady E-Hawks needed to come out and play a solid game, but their plans didn't quite pan out as hoped. Emmetsburg would struggle to get any kind of offensive flow going in the first quarter against Storm Lake, as they were only able to knock down three buckets in the first eight minutes of play. Defensively, the Lady E-Hawks kept the Tornadoes off balance through the first quarter and scoreless for a 6-0 lead to start the second frame.

Settling in a bit in the second quarter, Emmetsburg was able to start getting the offense to move better, but aggressive defense by the Tornadoes saw several balls knocked away on passes along with steals, but the Tornadoes would have turnover troubles of their own, being whistled repeatedly for traveling violations that limited them to just four points in the quarter and allowed Emmetsburg to post an 18-4 lead at the half-time break.

The Lady E-Hawks got a little bit of an awakening to start the second half, as Storm Lake came out and went on a quick, 7-0 run to cut the Emmetsburg lead to 18-11 within the first 1:30 of the half.

Coach Anna Fiene brought the starting five to the bench for a little soul searching and put in the reserves for the next couple minutes, giving the starters a chance to re-group and retake the floor with renewed purpose.

The tactic worked, as the Lady E-Hawks went on to post a 22-14 lead at the end of the third frame. In the final quarter, the offense slowed a bit as the Emmetsburg girls fought off the pesky Storm Lake defense and worked to take the 40-19 final margin of victory.

Emmetsburg would get 12 point efforts from both Tegan Olson and Bailey Naig in the contest, while Ashton Connelly added nine points and Michaela Rehm tallied the remaining seven points for the Lady E-Hawks.

Next week Emmetsburg will travel to Spirit Lake on Tuesday night and then to Cherokee on Friday.
