“High Voltage” Earns Grand Championship

January 28, 2014
Emmetsburg News

The Emmetsburg High School Varsity Show Choir, "High Voltage", began its competition season on Jan. 18 with an outstanding effort at the "Saturday Night Jive" show choir competition in West Branch. "High Voltage," under the direction of Mr. Dave Fog, was awarded the unanimous Grand Championship overall in this small school competition, while also winning the Class 2A Championship in the afternoon's opening round of the contest. Additionally, "High Voltage" was also awarded special recognition caption awards for Outstanding Vocals, Outstanding Choreography and The Showstoppers caption award.

At the conclusion of the afternoon preliminary round, "High Voltage" was nearly 50 points ahead of their nearest competition. "We knew we had a pretty good chance to win the overall award in the evening finals" commented EHS director Dave Fog. "I was a little worried that with a big lead, and because we had used up so much energy in the opening round, that we might come out flat in the finals, but that was not the case. The kids were really excited and did an even better job in the finals!"

The Emmetsburg Varsity Show Choirs have consistently been outstanding in their class and have qualified for the finals in nearly all of their competitions over the years; this is the first Grand Championship that "High Voltage" has been awarded 1996.

"West Branch was a smaller school showcase," Fog explained. "But, to get ready this early in the season takes a lot of dedication and effort and our students went after this opportunity with real determination and they can be really proud of themselves!"

"And, huge compliments need to also go out to our Pit Band and supporting stage crew members," Fog added. "We are very young in these areas this year, and some big expectations have been placed on these students but they responded really well and did a great job along with the vocalists!"

The competition season continued on Saturday, Jan. 25 as "High Voltage" traveled to the Dallas Center-Grimes "Take Two" Show Choir Invitational. Then on Saturday, Feb. 1, "High Voltage" travels to Roosevelt High School in Sioux Falls, SD, for a competition that will precede the Iowa High School Music Association's State Contest on Monday, Feb. 3. Emmetsburg will host the State Contest, with Show Choirs performing in the Emmetsburg High School Auditorium throughout the day.
