Our names are Eric and Mary Woodford, and we own Woodford Equipment, the only farm and lawn equipment dealership in Emmetsburg. Four years ago, we uprooted our family and completely changed our careers to move to this community. We started Woodford Equipment primarily to serve the equipment needs of POET-DSM's Project LIBERTY, a very progressive cellulosic ethanol plant that will produce ethanol from leftover corn cobs, leaves, husks and some stalk in the field. We have put a tremendous amount of time, energy and effort into starting this business and we are very proud to say that we are able to employ ourselves plus six other people in the community.
Eric had the unique opportunity to visit Sweden in 2010 on a renewable energy tour. His comments when he returned were, "I've always thought that the U.S. is first in the world in everything, but I now know that other countries, like Sweden, are much further advanced in the world of renewable energy."
We must move forward, not backward when it comes to developing alternatives to fossil fuels and foreign oil. We know firsthand that the RFS and biofuels have created jobs that cannot be outsourced, which have helped ensure a robust rural America. Additionally, renewable fuels are better for the air we breathe and for our environment and they are making a difference by decreasing our dangerous dependence on foreign oil. Biofuels are better for our national security, energy security and they benefit the consumer by providing them a choice and savings at the pump.
If we can use renewable energy now to replace some of our dependence on fossil fuels, our petroleum reserves will last longer and be more available for future generations. As a nation, we need to not be short-sighted by doing what is best for right now. We need to plan for the future.
The success of our business depends heavily upon stable renewable fuel policy. We strongly believe our country needs to invest in renewable energy development, including ethanol production.
We've shared our comments with the EPA and we hope you do the same before the January 28th deadline. Visit GrowthEnergy.org and follow their simple instructions it will only take a few minutes of your day and will make a difference! Join us in the fight to protect the RFS and our rural economies!
