Bales Destroyed by Fire

January 21, 2014
Emmetsburg News
Emmetsburg Firemen were called east of Emmetsburg late Friday morning, Jan. 17, when a flatbed loaded with bales of corn stalks was reported on fire. Firemen were on scene for three and a half hours in temperatures in the low teens and North winds gusting to 30 miles per hour. Thick, billowing smoke hampered visibility.
Emmetsburg Fire Chief Frank Kliegl said the trailer of bales burned itself gone and there was damage to the trailer as well. Estimated value of the 21 bales was $1,500 and damage to the trailer was estimated at another $2,000. The tractor and trailer are owned by Jeffrey Berkland, Okoboji.
Traffic on Highway 18 was rerouted for about three hours before the bales were pushed off the roadway and into the ditch. Assisting at the scene were members of the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Department, Iowa State Patrol and Iowa Department of Transportation. Mutual aid was provided by the Cylinder Fire Department.
