Absentee ballots are now available at the Palo Alto County Auditor's Office for the West Bend-Mallard special school election to be held on Tuesday, Feb. 4. The purpose of the special election is for a public measure for a Revenue Purpose Statement.
The Public Measure question on the ballot states, "The revenue received from the statewide sales tax shall be used for school infrastructure purposes and/or property tax relief. Such infrastructure purposes include but are not limited to the construction, reconstruction, repair, purchasing, or remodeling of schoolhouses, stadiums, gyms, field houses and bus garages, and the procurement of schoolhouse construction sites, the making of site improvements, demolition work and for equipment, transportation equipment, and public recreation and other activities for which revenues under Iowa Code sections 298.3 or 300.2 may be spent, i.e. the physical plant and equipment tax levy and the public educational and recreational levy tax. Additionally, "school infrastructure" includes the payment or retirement of outstanding bonds previously issued for school infrastructure purposes and the payment or retirement of bonds issued for school infrastructure purposes under Section 423E.5, Code of Iowa."
Voters will be asked to vote either "Yes" or "No" on the ballot.
Persons who are disabled or are going to be absent on Election Day may vote an absentee ballot at the County Auditor's Office or request an absentee ballot through the mail. Requests by mail must be on the Official Absentee Ballot Request Form available at the County Auditor's Office. The County Auditor's Office is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Absentee voting is available at the Auditor's Office from 8am to 11am on Election Day.
The last day to pre-register to vote for the school election is on Friday, Jan. 24, at 5 p.m.
The polls will be open on Tuesday, Feb. 4, from 12 Noon to 8 p.m.
West Bend-Mallard Community School District patrons will cast their votes at the West Bend Public Library or Mallard Community Center.
