Gunder Ernest Paulson, Jr. 1939-2013

OSCEOLA -- Gunder Ernest "Ernie" Paulson Jr., son of Gunder Ernest Paulson Sr. and Lila May (Williams) Paulson was born Sept. 28, 1939 in Estherville and passed from this life Monday, Sept. 23, 2013 at Southern Hills Specialty Care in Osceola at 73 years of age.

Ernie grew up in Armstrong. He married his first love, Mary Lee Askeland on Nov. 8, 1957. They were blessed with six children. Mary passed away in February of 2009 after 51 years of marriage.

Ernie married his second love, Judy Short, on July 16, 2011. With this union, Ernie welcomed four more children into his family.

Ernie was a family man. His family came first and he lead by example. He was a hard worker and always did his best at the job at hand. He was the first full time employee, when he was younger, for Art's Way Manufacturing. He worked for Lee Excavating and could operate a backhoe better than anyone. When he worked for the Co-Op everyone knew him as the "Gasman" when he delivered gas to the farmers in the area. He worked for the DX Station, welded on the pipeline in Southern Iowa and North Dakota, ran Paulson's Shuttle, and worked for Conlin Properties. His greatest love was farming and he loved working the land, dreaming of a large farm with a herd a cattle.

Ernie served as a volunteer fireman and with the ambulance for 25 years in Armstrong. He was a member of the Medora United Methodist Church. He enjoyed gardening, camping, golfing, fishing and mostly spending time with family and friends.

Those relatives who preceded Ernie in death were his parents; his brother, Richard; a sister, Marian Paulson; his son, Gunder Ernest Paulson III; his wife Mary; and son-in-law, Mark Johnson.

Ernie leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Judy Paulson of Osceola; daughters, Darla (Ron) Stewart of Nickerson, NE, Coleen Johnson of Vancouver, WA, Marsha Duhn of Emmetsburg, and Debbie (Gary) Heck of Eden Prairie, MN; sons, Dan (Julie) Paulson of Fairfield Bay, AR, Gary (Jackie) Short of Osceola, Dale (Lisa Parrish) Short of Osceola, Lance (Valarie) Short of Indianola, and Shayne (Nicki) Short of Osceola; 29 grandchildren, Ronnie, Diane, Donnie, Debbie, Josh, Erin, Dennie, Val, Kiersten, Rachel, Aubrey, Tom, Jenny, Mervin, Cathy, Joshua, Chelsey, Caitlynn, Brandon, Abbigail, Aaron, Jake, Taylor, Madison, Seth, Carson, Kyler, Layne and Jadi; 17 great grandchildren, Collin, Haylee, Hayden, Grace, Lucas, Colton, Lily, Serenity, Isabelle, Sammy, Bryce, Brody, Elliana, Vander, Isaac, Braxton, Justin; and two on the way. Also surviving are brothers Marlin (Carolyn) Paulson of Armstrong and Arnold Paulson of Armstrong; and sisters Aileen Rienhardt of Armstrong, Pauline (Roger) Solberg of Ringsted, and Karen Ann (Butch) Thackery of Armstrong; sister-in-law, Elizabeth (Pete) Rush of Albert Lea, MN; and numerous cherished nieces and nephews and many friends.

Visitation:

5 to 7 pm on Thursday, Sept. 26, at Kale Funeral Home (Osceola Chapel), 301 S. Main St., Osceola.

Service:

Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 27, at Medora United Methodist Church in Medora, IA.

There will also be a memorial service at the Nazareth Lutheran Church in Armstrong at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28.
