Even though the weather may seem like the heart of summer, the calendar says summer is at is end with the Labor Day Holiday. The community of Graettinger is putting the finishing touches on its annual celebration of summer this weekend with its 117th Annual Graettinger Labor Day Celebration. The three-day long event is billed as Iowa's Oldest Continuous Labor Day Celebration, with activities starting bright and early Saturday, Aug. 31.
Wednesday's activities start at 8:00 a.m. with the tee off of the first of two days of the Men's Golf tournament at the Hillcrest Golf Course, along with the start of city-wide garage sales. Entry of items for the annual FFA Grain and Flower Show will get underway at 9 a.m. and the FFA Children's Barnyard Exhibit will also open at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Also beginning in Citizen's Memorial Park at 9 a.m. will be the Softball Tournament, which will run all day. A dunk tank will also operate at the park during the tournament, to benefit the GT/RA Titanettes Dance Team, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
At Noon, Bingo, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus and Catholic Daughters, will open and continue daily to 10 p.m. in the former Happy Hour building on Main Street. The popular bean-bag tournament will get underway at 1p.m. in Citizens Memorial Park and the McDermott Family Shows carnival rides and attractions will open at 1 p.m. and operate to 10 p.m. nightly.
Saturday's activities will conclude with the Street Dance, sponsored by the Labor Day Committee, on Main Street, complete with beer garden and music by the Sideline Band, starting at 9 .p.m.
Sunday's activities start with a Bar-B-Que Cook Off competition at the Side Street Lounge, starting at 8 a.m. Also starting at 8 a.m. will be the annual Graettinger Firemen's Pancake Breakfast at the Fire Hall, with serving continuing through 12 noon.
The Labor Day Antique Tractor Pull will begin at the Pro Coop property and a sand volleyball tournament will start at 11 a.m. at Citizens' Memorial Park.
A craft show will be held at the Graettinger Senior Center from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday and the FFA Fun Day for kids will be held at Fahnestock Park starting at 11 a.m.
Starting at 1 p.m. on the northeast edge of town will be the Hot Rod Lawn Mower pull and ATV Mud Bog competitions.
Sunday's activities wind down at 7 p.m. at the Graettinger-Terril High School gym with the annual Labor Day Variety Show and crowning of Miss Graettinger for 2013. During the program, the Labor Day Grand Marshals, Lloyd and Lucy McCombs, will also be honored.
Labor Day Monday will dawn with the 5K Run/Walk, starting at at 8 a.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church. The Sporting Clays shoot will begin at 8 a.m. and the American Legion Kids Races start at 9 a.m. at Fahnestock Park.
The Turkey Dinner at the United Methodist Church will serve from 10:30 a.m to 1 p.m. and at 1;30 p.m. the annual Labor Day Parade will sart at Evergreen Park and make its way uptown.
From 3 to 6 p.m. will be pork chop supper at the American Legion and Fun and Games competition will start at 4 p.m. in Fahnestock Park.
Labor Day will conclude Monday evening with the drawings for the Grand Prize raffles on Main Street at 7 p.m.
