Larry J. Egland 1936-2013

Funeral services for Larry Egland were held Monday, July 8, at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Depew. Pastor David Moore officiated. Interment was in St. John's North Cemetery.

Larry Jerome Egland, the son of Nelvin and Selma (Naig) Egland was born Jan. 7, 1936 in the Whittemore area. He passed away Friday, July 5, 2013 at the Emmetsburg Care Center at the age of 77.

Larry grew up in the Cylinder area where he was baptized and confirmed in St. John's Lutheran Church in Depew. He received his education in the Cylinder schools, graduating from the Cylinder High School in 1953.

On June 10, 1956, Larry was united in marriage to Marilyn Harrison. The couple made their home in the Cylinder area where they raised their family. They farmed for 40 years and Larry had a grain hauling business.

Larry was active in St. John's Lutheran Church as choir member and Assistant Sunday School Superintendent, along with other activities. Larry was instrumental in forming the area Cub Scout and Boy Scout programs in Cylinder. He was a 4-H Leader in Independence Township. When semi-retired, Larry and Marilyn moved to Emmetsburg and Larry was employed at various busi- nesses in town.

Larry had a passion for flying and obtained his pilots license and was a member of the Iowa Flying Farmers. Fishing was also a passion for Larry which resulted in Larry opening "Larry's Bait Shop".

Larry enjoyed performing in the community theatre, was a member of the Algona Cornbelt Chorus for over 20 years. He was involved with the Emmetsburg Kiwanis, always willing to help with their pancake breakfasts.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 57 years, Marilyn, of Emmetsburg; his children, Greg (Vicki) of Emmetsburg; Tim (Pam) of Spencer; Cathy (Jeff) of West Fargo, ND; and Kent of Emmetsburg; ten grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his brother Roger (Julie) of Storm Lake; nephew Paul (Kristi) and their two children of Sioux Falls, SD.

Preceding Larry in death were his parents; and a nephew, Tom Egland.
