Clarice Elbert 1926-2013

WHITTEMORE -- Funeral Mass for Clarice Elbert was celebrated on Saturday, April 20, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Whittemore with Father Victor Ramaeker officiating. Burial was in St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery.

Clarice "Cree" Alvena Elbert was born Jan. 3, 1926, in Everly, the daughter of Albert and Clara (Fell) Thiessen. She grew up in Everly and graduated from the Everly High School and went on to attend the University of Northern Iowa. She taught for one year in rural school until she was old enough to enter nurses training.

She attended and graduated from nurses training at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines. Cree worked as an RN in Des Moines, Spencer and Emmetsburg and for the Red Cross before she was married.

On April 13, 1950, Cree was united in marriage to Art Elbert at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spencer. After their marriage they lived on a farm near Whittemore and Cree continued to work as a nurse in Emmetsburg. They later moved into Whittemore in 1980.

Cree enjoyed reading, writing, fishing, traveling, gardening, working crossword puzzles and playing cards, especially Bridge. She also enjoyed being with her sisters and spending time with them. She was very active in the Whittemore Library, as well as a member of St. Michael's Rosary Society, American Legion Auxiliary and the Whittemore Women's Club.

Cree died Thursday, April 18, 2013, at the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona. She was 87.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Art of Whittemore; children, Dr. Rick and Linda Elbert of Ogden; Kathleen and Myros Samilo of St. Paul, MN; Jay Elbert of Whittemore; Jodi and Rod Smith of Lakota; Kent and Jamie Elbert of Whittemore; Jeff and Sherie Elbert of Marathon; 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; brother, Richard and Audrey Thiessen of Spencer; sisters, Frances Nassif of Des Moines; Rhoda Kaiser of Milford; Mary Ellen Cosimo of Des Moines and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Sara Goddard and daughter-in-law, Diane Elbert.

Arrangements were handled by Oakcrest Funeral Services of Whittemore.
