ESTHERVILLE - The golf season opened on a very positive note for the Emmetsburg Lady E-Hawks as they captured the top team honors at Tuesday's Estherville Lincoln Central Invitational. The event was played at the Estherville Golf Club.
"For the lack of course time we've had this season, this was pretty exciting," noted Emmetsburg Head Coach Ted Riley."This was a very good outing for us at this time of the year."
Emmetsburg's Ashton Connelly would earn runner-up medalist honors with a round of 52, trailing medalist Tia Bernholz of ELC, who carded a 51 for the medalist honors.
Finishing third overall was Taylor Knight of the Lady E-Hawks, who also shot a round of 52 but placed third off a tiebreaker to her teammate. Emmetsburg senior Hannah VanOosbree earned fourth place individually with a round of 53, while Katie Ruiz would card a 55.
Emmetsburg senior Jacque Carlson shot a round of 59 and Michaela Rehm rounded out the varsity effort with a round of 65.
Final team scoring saw Emmetsburg win with a score of 212, besting Spencer, who shot a 227. Harris-Lake Park finished third with a 231, while Estherville Lincoln Cental placed fourth with a round of 251. Spirit Lake was fifth with a 256 stroke total and North Union placed sixth with a 281, while Cherokee fielded just three golfers and had an incomplete score.
"We've got a squad of 18 girls this season who are all working very hard,"?noted Riley. "It's good to finally be able to play a meet and get the time on the course. Hopefully, the weather will straighten out and we'll be able to get the junior varsity out on the course as well."
The Lady E-Hawks are scheduled to golf at Spencer today (Thursday), weather permitting, and then resume action Monday at Spirit Lake before hosting Western Christian and ELC?on Tuesday.
