After alerts to the public about financial scams in the area, the Emmetsburg Police Department has received several calls from residents to another scam tactic.
According to Officer Darrin Adams of the Emmetsburg Police Department, local residents have been receiving phone calls telling them there is a banking issue due to account numbers being incorrect or missing on deposits and statements. With the calls, the scammers are attempting to get unsuspecting customers to provide their personal and bank account information.
"These scams will continue to change and evolve to meet the needs of the scammer,"?noted Officer Adams. "The Emmetsburg Police Department has worked with our local financial institutions, retailers, service providers and victims on this and several other scams in an attempt to further protect and warn Emmetsburg and area citizens."
According to Adams, the best defense to any scam is to never trust the person calling or contacting you to be who they claim to be.
"Protect your financial and private information. If you are contacted by somebody you suspect to be a scammer, DO?NOT?provide them any information. Hang up and contact your service provider or financial institution directly,"?Adams cautioned.
The Emmetsburg Police Department will continue to work with banks and retailers to stay ahead of or keep up with the newest scam tactics.
