Equal Pay Day

Tuesday, April 9, 2013

This date symbolizes how far into 2013 women must work to earn what men earned in 2012.

"In Iowa, women's median income is only 79% of the income of men. Iowa's median income for women employed full-time and year-round in 2010 was $34,534. The median income for Iowa men during the same year was $43,872. The gap is even larger for African American and Hispanic women.

"Pay equity is not just a woman's issue -- it is a family issue, as well as a nation's economic issue."

--from She Matters, the 2012 Status of Women and Girls in Iowa Report published by the Iowa Women's Leadership Project

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) is the nation's leading advocate promoting equity and education for women and girls. Since our founding in 1881, AAUW members have carefully examined educational, social, economic and political issues, taking stands far ahead of popular opinion. To achieve economic self-sufficiency for all women, AAUW advocates Pay Equity in public and private employment.

AAUW?Iowa members include over 1,000 men and women holding associate or higher degrees, student affiliates, 30 grassroots branches, and 18 college-university institutional member partners in this state.
