The Kossuth County Economic Development Corporation will sponsor a CEO Network Meeting on Thursday, April 11, at the KC Hall in Algona from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Maureen Elbert, Executive Director, stated, "We are excited about our guest speakers, Val Newhouse and Darin Massner, who will be speaking about the STEM Program in Iowa."
STEM is an acronym that stands for science, technology, engineering and math.
"Our goal is to inform business leaders of this program and how it will impact their workforce in the future. We also want to inspire and encourage students to take this coursework so they can start to see the impact these classes have on their life and the great careers students can have in the future," Elbert said.
Val Newhouse is President of Iowa Lakes Community College. Iowa Lakes was designated one of six STEM Hubs in Iowa in May, 2012. Staff members will be on hand to share history and progress with this exciting venture elevating Science, Technology, Engineering and Math in the K-12 classrooms across the area. STEM Careers are a growing segment of high paying jobs in the future, and Iowa is positioning itself to be a leader in this area.
Darin Massner, CEO of Country Maid, will share the company's experience sponsoring a group of kids in a STEM based initiative called "First Lego League" or FLL. Skills and experiences acquired by the FLL team will be shared, along with observations by a FLL team coach. The FLL experience was a powerful motivator for the participants to learn about STEM principles, and Country Maid is excited to continue support for the FLL programs as a result of what the FLL team accomplished and what they learned.
The cost is $10 per person and includes lunch. For information or to register, call the K/PACEDC office at 515-295-7979, or email firstname.lastname@example.org. Please register by April 1.
