A Great Weekend To Be Irish Is Shaping Up

'Tis said that on St. Patrick's Day, everyone is Irish. The Irish magic will be aplenty this weekend in Emmetsburg for the 2013 St. Patrick's Day Celebration. A full schedule of events has been finalized that will have something for everyone to enjoy in Iowa's Irish Capitol.

The activities started on Sunday with the crowning of the 2013 Little Miss, Little Lassie and Irish Miss during the pageant at the Emmetsburg High School. Ava Burdorf will reign as the new Little Miss Shamrock, while Tatum Iverson is the 2013 Little Lassie and Kayla Joyce will reign as the Irish Miss.

The Irish Dignitary, Marcella Corcoran-Kennedy, TD, will arrive in Emmetsburg on Wednesday, March 13 and will officially be welcomed to the community at the St. Patrick's Headquarters Open House, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the headquarters at 10th and Broadway.

Thursday night the annual St. Pat's Talent show will be held at the Emmetsburg High School Auditorium starting at 8 p.m.

Activities ramp up on Friday evening, March 15, starting with the Emmetsburg Chamber of Commerce's Weekly Chamber Coffee event at 9:30 a.m. in the Iowa Welcome Center at the Chamber Offices on Broadway. Irish Dignitary Marcella Corcoran-Kennedy, TD, will be the guest of honor at the coffee. Additionally, the weekly Fish Fry at the VFW will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday.

A new event for the celebration is the Paint, Sip, Create event, which will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Saxton's Greenhouse. The event will allow participants an opportunity to create their own 16x20 canvas painting of a Celtic cross with Shamrocks. Reservations are requested to participate in the event and may be made at

Rounding out Friday's activities is the annual Miss Shamrock Pageant, starting at 7 p.m. at the Emmetsburg High School Auditorium. Six young women will be competing for the crown during the event. The Iowa State University Celtic Dance Society will provide special entertainment at the program.

Saturday's activities will begin at 8:30 a.m. with the start of the O'Round the Loch Scholarship Runs at Iowa Lakes Community College. The Half-Marathon and Relay will start at 8:30 and will be followed by the 10K run at 8:40, the 5K run at 9 a.m. and the 1.7 mile fun run/walk at 9:10 a.m. All races start and finish at the Smith Wellness Center Complex.

Also starting at 8:30 a.m. will be the pedal tractor pull for youth ages 4-11. The event will be held at Corrigan Hall and is being sponsored by Farm Credit Services of America.

The 100th Birthday Celebration of Emmetsburg's Carnegie Library Building will be observed on Saturday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the facility, which is now home to the Palo Alto County Extension Office. An Open House with refreshments is planned at the facility, located at 2008 10th Street in Emmetsburg.

From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Palo Alto County Arts Council will sponsor Kiracatures by Kira at Corrigan Hall. Kira will create free "Kiracatures" of those who stop by during the event. At the same time, free Face Painting will also be taking place at Corrigan Hall from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Another new event for St. Pat's weekend will be the Emmetsburg Shamrock Dog Show, which will begin at 10 a.m. in Courthouse Square. This will be a show for all dogs with numerous classes. For more information, contact Glamorous Paws at 712-922-9035.

At 11:30 a.m., another new event, the Laura Ernst Show, will come to Corrigan Hall. The show, as seen on "America's Got Talent", will feature the human-sized hamster ball, aerial acts and juggling. The free show is for all ages and will last about 45 minutes. It is being sponsored by AgPartners-Steve Schany and Bad Manners.

An outdoor activity will begin at 11 a.m. in Courthouse Square, as chainsaw artist Jeff Klatt will parlay his artistic skills to create a pair of sculptures. These sculptures will then be auctioned off at 6 p.m. at the Emmetsburg Fire Hall.

It wouldn't be St. Pat's Weekend without some Irish Stew, and the annual Irish Stew Feed will begin at 10:45 a.m. and continue to 1 p.m. at the Multipurpose Senior Center on 11th Street. The event is sponsored by the Palo Alto County Democrats.

Food vendors will be located on 10th Street, adjacent to Courthouse Square, during the noon and afternoon as well.

At high noon, rugby football returns to the St. Pat's Celebration at the old Middle School Football Field. Gopher College of Algona is the host team to the Iowa Falls Rugby Football Club, Mason City Rugby Football Club and Storm Lake Albatross Rugby Football Club in a tournament starting at noon. Games will be played each hour with the championship set for 3 p.m.

The Pre-Parade event featuring the visiting dignitaries will take place from 1 to 1:30 p.m. with introductions of the dignitaries at the parade reviewing stand on Broadway.

The Famous St. Patrick's Day Parade is next up at 1:30 p.m., and the 2013 edition of the parade returns to its roots, as the parade route will lineup on the south edge of Emmetsburg, on 25th Street, with the parade starting at 16th Street and making its way north on Broadway.

Chainsaw artist Jeff Klatt will resume his carving at 3 p.m. following the parade in Courthouse Square.

Following the parade at 3 p.m., the Social Gathering of the Clans and Friends of Emmetsburg will take place at the Emmetsburg Fire Station. All are welcomed to attend. The auction of the two chainsaw sculptures is set for 6 p.m. at the Fire Hall.

At 3:30 p.m., Alan Johnson, Comedy Juggler Extrodrinare, will take to the stage at Corrigan Hall in a free show sponsored by the Kerber Companies and Buhrow Construction and Custom Cabinetry. Alan Johnson has performed on such television shows as ER, Night Court and has appeared with the legendary entertainer George Burns.

The free movie, "Brave" will be shown at the Riviera Theatre, starting at 4:30 p.m.

On Sunday, St. Pat's activities wind down, starting with the Emmetsburg Rotary Scholarship Pancake Breakfast at the Emmetsburg VFW from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The Palo Alto Sportsman's Gun Club will host the annual St. Pat's Trap Shoot Sunday from 12 noon to 3 p.m. at the club grounds at Sportsman's Park, north of Cylinder. For more information, contact Don Bruch at 712-852-3240.
