DES?MOINES - In his first-ever appearance at the Iowa High School State Wrestling Tournament, Cody Thompson of Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire earned a sixth place finish for the Titans. Thompson earned his medal during consolation finals Saturday afternoon at the 2013 State Championships, held at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Thompson, a sophomore 285 pounder for Titans Head Coach Michael Jensen, opened his state tournament appearance in the Class 1A portion of the three-day event on Thursday morning, when he faced Dalton Lape of North Fayette-West Union.

Thompson would start his tournament off with a bang as he pinned Lape in 3:45 to advance into Friday morning's Quarter-final round of wrestling.

Returning to Wells Fargo on Friday morning, things wouldn't go as well for Thompson, as he would end up the victim of a fall in 5:14 at the hands of Mitch Gambrill of Clarion-Goldfield.

The loss dropped Thompson into the consolation brackets, where he would have to continue to win to have a hope for a third place finish.

For his first consolation match on Friday, Thompson was paired with Garrett Johnston of Panora-Panorama and earned a 7-3 decision to advance into the consolation quarter-final round.

Later Friday afternoon, Thompson was matched against Dylan Conley of Moravia in the consolation quarter-finals and battled the senior to a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation. Going into the sudden victory overtime period, Thompson managed to gain control over Conley for the takedown and 3-1 decision win.

On Saturday morning, Thompson would wrestle in the consolation semi-finals match for the right to advance to the third place match.

However, Thompson's luck ran out as he met up with Landan Paulsen of Woodbury Central, Thompson would come up short in a 3-1 decision that dropped him into the fifth place match at 285 pounds.

Coming right back, Thompson would wrestle his original quarterfinal opponent, Mitch Gambrill of Clarion-Goldfield, but the outcome would be a little different, as Thompson would lose a 5-1 decision to Gambrill to settle for the sixth place medal to close out his state tournament experience.
