Funeral service for Philip L. Janssen of Emmetsburg is Saturday, Feb. 23, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg. The Rev. Nicholas Thackery will officiate.
Interment will be in Silver Lake Cemetery, Ayrshire. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg is in charge of arrangements.
The visitation is Friday, Feb. 22, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg.
Philip LeRoy Janssen, son of Bernard and Nellie (Garrelts) Janssen, was born Oct. 31, 1932 in Great Oak Township. He attended country school and Ayrshire Consolidated High School, graduating in 1951. Following high school, Philip served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged in March 1955.
On Oct. 8, 1953 Philip was united in marriage to Elizabeth "Betty" Baxter in Sleepy Eye, MN. To this union four children were born.
After returning from the service. Phil began working for Les Shellabarger doing carpentry work. After two years he began farming and remained in the home he was born in his entire life except for four years.
Phil was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg and past member of Zion Lutheran Church in Ayrshire. He had served on the PCA Board and was a past member of the Ayrshire American Legion and Pony Express.
Phil died Monday, Feb. 18, 2013 at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg, at the age of 80. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Carl Janssen; and sister-in-law, Marie Janssen.
He is survived by his wife, Betty of Emmetsburg; his children, Virginia Reeves (Ben) of Conesville, Dennis Janssen (Sandra) of Donnellson, Bernard Janssen (Linda) of Emmetsburg, and Kathy Last (Mike) of West Liberty; eight grandchildren; three step grandchildren; three great grand- children; a brother, Robert Janssen of Curlew; two sisters, Bernadine Coleman (Lawrence) of Ruthven, and Ruth Davis (Ron) of Heyburn, ID; sister-in-law, Cecilia Janssen of Em- metsburg; as well as many other relatives and friends.
