DES MOINES Returning to the State Dual Team Wrestling Tournament for the first time in four years, Emmetsburg's E-Hawks would end up with a sixth place finish in the Class 1A Competition on Wednesday morning.
Emmetsburg would be edged in their first dual of the day by a 36-31 by Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont.
The E-Hawks rebounded to defeat Audubon 43-30, but would fall in their final match to Sumner-Fredricksburg by a 61-18 final tally.
E-Hawks vs Rockets
Matching up against the Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont.Rockets, the dual started at 160 pounds with Wes Brennan losing in a 3:30 fall to Bret Wurstra. At 170, Nick Schany would earn a 3:08 win by fall over Dalton Brown and at 182, Andrew Wellik claimed a 5-1 decision over Dillon Pigsley.
The E-Hawks would receive a 15-5 Major decision victory from Austin McCartan at 195 as he manhandled over Hunter Johnson. A change to the lineup for the E-Hawks saw Tanner Dahm take the mat at 220 pounds against the Rockets' Luke Welch. Dahm wasted little time in coming up with a big 1:04 win by fall to give Emmetsburg a 19-6 lead.
Tayler Wegner would claim a 3:06 win by fall over Chance Wurstra in the 285 pound match as Emmetsburg was building up a head of steam. At 106 pounds, Dillon VanOosbree battled Anthony Rea closely through their match and came away with a 12-7 decision victory for a 28-6 team score.
In the 113 pound match, Brett Steinkamp squared off against Megan Black and fell victim to a 1:14 pin. Jake Miller would suffer a similar fate at 120 pounds as he was pinned in 1:39 by Jeren Glosser. Nick Merwald would end up on the wrong end of an 8-3 decision at the hands of Cody Brown in the 126 pound match, making the score 28-21.
Tyler Leuer would battle Blake Marolf in the 132 pound match but lost a 3-0 decision before Chris VanHeuvelen was pinned in 2:32 of his 138 pound match with Jason Crosby that put Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont ahead by a 30-28 score.
At 145, Caige Elbert was pinned in 1:10 by Tucker Black, but at 152 pounds, Brady Bailey managed to earn an 8-6 decision over Treg VanDorin, but the win left Emmetsburg five points shy in the 31-36 final tally.
E-Hawks vs Wheelers
After falling into the consolation round at the state duals, Emmetsburg's E-Hawks gained a small measure of redemption for their opening round loss with a 43-36 win over Audubon.
Emmetsburg started their second dual of the day with a 3:55 win by fall as Nick Schany pinned Jordan Hansen in the 170 pound opener. But, the E-Hawks chose to forfeit the 182 pound match to the Wheelers, tying the score at 6-6. Austin McCartan quickly changed that with a :20 win by fall over Wyatt Christiansen and at 220 pounds, Tayler Wegner duplicated the effort with a :20 win by fall over Kolby Hunnicut.
In action at 285, Pat Brennan would fall victim to Matt Fett in a 1:54 fall, but at 106, Dillon VanOosbree earned a 13-2 Major decision victory over Collin Subbert. Brett Steinkamp earned a :52 win by fall over Beau Nickum in the 113 pound match for the E-Hawks, giving Emmetsburg a 28-12 advantage on the scoreboard.
At 120, Jake Miller would fall victim to Brad Kerkhoff in a 1:54 fall, but at 126, Nick Merwald collected a 3:53 win by fall over Heath Irlmeier for a 34-18 team score. Tyler Leuer came out in the 132 pound match and earned a 3:20 win by fall over Andrew Molloy.
The E-Hawks got a nice win in the 138 pound match as Chris VanHeuvelen earned a 5-0 decision victory over Ryver Knueven, but at 145, Caige Elbert was pinned in 1:20 by Trevor Smith. Joe Schmidt would get the nod at 152 pounds and was pinned in :57 of his match with Kolton Jensen before Wes Brennan ended the dual, losing by a 5:07 fall to Lucas Smith-Peterson for the 43-36 final score.
E-Hawks vs Cougars
The final match of the duals pitted the E-Hawks against Sumner-Fredricksburg for fifth place honors, but Emmetsburg would fall with a younger lineup by a 18-61 final tally.
Emmetsburg forfeited at 182 pounds to the Cougars and at 195 pounds, Robert Nelson battled to a 5-10 decision loss to Seth Kipp. Keegan Barret, wrestling at 220 pounds for the E-Hawks, would be pinned in 2:42 of his match with Dustin Gaede and at 285 pounds, Pat Brennan was pinned in :36 of his match with Gunner Mohs.
Connor Crosgrove would wrestle at 106 pounds and was the victim of a?3:56 pin at the hands of Clayton Langreck. At 113, Brett Steinkamp was pinned in 2:37 of his match with Isiah Brandt before Emmetsburg forfeited at 120 pounds.
Senior Nick Merwald closed out his prep career with a 5:40 win by fall over Keenan Gienau in action at 126 pounds to put Emmetsburg on the scoreboard. But at 132, Chance Saathoff was pinned in :29 by Benton Ganske.
Chris VanHeuvelen would be the victim of a 1:15 fall at the hands of Brady Meyer and at 145 pounds, Caige Elbert lost a 14-4 Major Decision to Bryce Rausch.
Brady Bailey would get Emmetsburg's second win of the dual with a 1:09 win by fall over Austin Seitsinger at 152 pounds before Wes Brennan was pinned in 1:09 of his 160 pound match with Trevor Pagel.
Nick Schany would close out the dual for the E-Hawks with a 3:13 win by fall in his 170 pound match for the 18-61 final tally.
