WBM?Girls Down Bishop Garrigan

ALGONA - The post season started out on a positive note Thursday night for th eLady Wolverines of West Bend-Mallard/Gilmore City-Bradgate as they claimed a 58-42 win over Bishop Garrigan in the opening round of Class 1A District Tournament play.

The win advanced the Lady Wolverines into a Tuesday night matchup with Storm Lake St. Mary's at Laurens.

In Thursday's contest, the Lady Wolverines got off to a quick start, holding Bishop Garrigan to a bucket in the first quarter, while WBM/GCB would take an 11-2 lead as the first quarter came to a close.

The Golden Bears shook off their cold start and came back to score 15 points in the second quarter, trading bucket for bucket with the Lady Wolverines, but at the intermission, West Bend-Mallard/Gilmore City-Bradgate held the 27-17 advantage.

The second half would almost turn into a carbon copy of the first quarter, as the Lady Wolverine defense limited the Golden Bears to seven points, while the offense dropped in 15 points to take a 42-24 lead into the final quarter of play.

Bishop Garrigan would outscore the Lady Wolverines in the final quarter 18-16, but it was too little too late as the Lady Wolverines would go on to take the 58-42 margin of victory.

For West Bend-Mallard/Gilmore City-Bradgate, Kayla Banwart led the offensive effort with 21 points, while Sarah Mader added 11 points and Cassie Gearhart added 10 points. Ashley Schmidt would add six points to the tally, while Kenzie Grimm chipped in five markers. Courtney Bargman would score three points and Kaylee Lanus added two points to the winning effort.

Cassie Gearhart pulled down nine rebounds for the Lady Wolverines, while Kayla Banwart dished out five assists and made four steals in the contest.
