POCAHONTAS - The start of tournament play gives every team a fresh start on their season. For Emmetsburg, it was a positive start to the second season with a 54-41 win over Pocahontas Area in the first round of Class 2A District Girls basketball action Saturday night.
With the win, Emmetsburg advances to the second round at Armstrong tonight,(Tuesday) ina 7 p.m. meeting with North Union.
For Emmetsburg, the win on Saturday avenged a 31--point loss to the Indians from the first game of the season.
Emmetsburg came out with a solid defense on Saturday and was able to work their offense to take a 15-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Emmetsburg would tighten down on the defense even more in the second quarter, building a 13-point lead over the Indians in the second quarter before posing an 11-point, 31-20 lead at the intermission.
Pocahontas Area would try to battle back in the third quarter, cutting Emmetsburg's lead down to three points at one time, but a concerted defensive effort by Emmetsburg would allow the Lady E-Hawks to pose a nine-point, 42-33 advantage to start the final quarter.
Sensing a victory, the Lady E-Hawks continued to play some outstanding defense in the final quarter, getting shots to fall and they would go on to score the 54-41 final margin of victory.
Ashton Connelly would lead the effort with a double-double, scoring 26 points and pulling down 14 rebounds in the win. Alexa Naig added 13 points to the effort, while Hadley Egland scored seven points, Michaela Rehm added six points and Whitney Kibbie tallied two points.
