MILFORD - Emmetsburg's E-Hawk wrestlers earned four championships and three runner up finishes at Saturday's Class 1A District Tournament. The E-Hawks also captured the District Team Championship with 206 points to make a statement on the day.
The Titans of Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire qualified one wrestler for this week's state tournament, which begins at 9 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
"It was a good day for us," noted Emmetsburg Head Coach Jared Pickett. "The boys all wrestled very well and I'm very proud of all their efforts."
The E-Hawks earned championships at 152 pounds from Brady Bailey, as well as at 182 pounds from Andrew Wellik. Austin McCartan claimed the title at 195 pounds and Tayler Wegner came away with the 220 pound championships.
Earning runner-up finishes were Jake Miller at 120 pounds, Tyler Leuer at 132 pounds, and Nick Schany, who had to wrestle back to earn the true second place finish.
AT 152 pounds, Brady Bailey met Connor Holmes of Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn/Remsen-Union in he opening round and recored a win by fall in :47. In the finals, Bailey wrestled Tyler Hubrich of Pocahontas Area and won the title with a 1:43 win by fall.
In action at 182 pounds, Andrew Wellik tallied an 11-3 Major Decision over Dylan Brockshus of Sibley-Ocheyedan and then met Justin Theisen of Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn/Remsen-Union and earned his championship with a 1:54 win by fall over Theisen.
Austin McCartan would earn a 14-3 Major Decision win over Travis Vander Streek of Central Lyon/George Little Rock, and then went on to win the 195 pound title with a 12-4 Major Decision win over Jeremy Watson of Pocahontas Area.
At 220 pounds, Tayler Wegner scored a 1:54 win by fall over Ben Starr of Central Lyon/George-Little Rock and in the championship match, earned a measure of revenge with a 3:13 win by fall over Michael Davidson of Ridge View to round out Emmetsburg's champions.
In action at 120 pounds, Jake Miller earned a :31 win by fall over Alex Montes of West Sioux in the opening round, moving him into the championship match against Harley Janssen of Manson Northwest Webster. Janssen would get the 1:16 win by fall to give Miller the second place finish without a wrestleback.
Tyler Leuer opened his day at 132 pounds with a 6-5 decision victory over Heath Nagel of Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, but in the championship match, Leuer would lose a 3-1 decision to Alexanders Schmitz of Carroll Kuemper to finish second without a wrestleback.
But for Nick Schany at 170, the road to state was a little tougher. Schany scored a 1:33 win by fall over Justin Richardson of Okoboji in the opening round, but in the finals, Schany would lose a 5-2 decision to Jacob Meehan of Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn/Remsen-Union. With the loss, ?Schany was forced to wrestle back against Tyler Case of Pocahontas Area. Schany would dominate the wrestleback, scoring and 18-6 Major Decision to earn the second place finish at 170.
For E-Hawk freshman Dillon VanOosbree, his first round match would end in a 1:51 fall at the hands of Treyton Virtue of Central Lyon/George-Little Rock. VanOosbree would meet Brady Jones of Okoboji in the third place match and scored a 6-2 decision win to place third, but VanOosbree would have no opportunity to wrestle back.
