Catholic Schools Week is being observed this week, Sunday, Jan. 27, through Saturday, Feb. 2.

"We spend this week celebrating over 120 years of Catholic education in Emmetsburg," said Jean Hyslop, Principal at Emmetsburg Catholic School.

The week of activities began Sunday with Catholic Schools Week Mass and Concert. Mrs. Kelley Fog directs the concert each year. Students in grades K-8 enjoyed a program with a faith-based message. The three-year-olds and four-year-olds also performed several songs.

Special events this week include guest speaker Kendra Gottsleben. She will speak to students in fourth through eighth grades. Students in Kindergarten through third grade will do an activity called Trinity Shamrock.

Emmetsburg Catholic School's annual Carnival will be held Wednesday, Jan. 30, in the school cafeteria and gym. The carnival is from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Tickets are available for the carnival events and all are welcome to attend.

Favorite Team Day is observed Thursday, Jan. 31. Students will dress up in their favorite team shirt.

The week closes Friday, Feb. 1, with the Chamber Coffee in the school library. The day will end with the movie Ice Age 4 for all students, including preschoolers. The movie will be shown downtown at the Riviera Theatre. Any preschool students wishing to attend should call the school so that enough treats can be ordered.

"During this week of celebration, we take this opportunity to introduce our new Marketing/Development Director, Mrs. Arleigh DeWall," said Jean Hyslop. "She currently serves as part-time secretary for the parish and will add the marketing/development director position to her schedule."

Arleigh's office is the old Kindergarten locker room in the school. Her office hours will be Tuesday through Thursday, from 2 to 4 p.m.

"Emmetsburg Catholic School thanks the parents, parishioners, communities and all benefactors who make it possible for families to select a catholic education for their children," said Principal Hyslop.
