E-Hawks Crown Pair Of Champions At Forest City Tourney

FOREST?CITY?- Emmetsburg's E-Hawk wrestlers earned two individual championships at Saturday's Forest City Invitational. Emmetsburg also earned a pair of runner-up finishes, as well as two third place finishes and a sixth place finish with a limited lineup on Saturday.

Nick Schany and Austin McCartan both earned the titles at 170 and 195 pounds, while Brett Steinkamp at 113 and Taylor Wegner at 220 both finished in second place. Jake Miller at 120 and Nick Merwald at 125 earned third place honors with Dillon VanOosbree placing sixth at 106 pounds.

The opening round of action, Dillon VanOosbree lost a 15-0 Technical Fall in 4:00 to Austin Staudt of the Charles City JV squad in action at 106 pounds. Brett Steinkamp earned a 1:04 win by fall over Cutler Bruce of Riceville-St. Ansgar in action at 113 pounds. At 120, Jake Miller drew a bye and at 126, Nick Merwald earned a 9-1 Major Decision win over Mason Weiler of LeMars.

At 132 pounds, Chance Saathoff was pinned in 2:59 of his match wil Tony Fifta of LeMars and at 138 pounds, Caige Elbert was pinned in 1:40 of his match with Adam Staudt of Charles City.

Joe Schmidt was pinned in 2:26 of his match with Beau Sorenson of Forest City in action at 145 pounds, but at 170, Nick Schany earned a :39 win by fall over Brody Mathey of LeMars.

Austin McCartan drew a first-round bye at 195 pounds and a 220, Taylor Wegner pinned Devin Winterink of Charles City in :37 to end the first round.

Moving into the first round consolation matches, Dillon VanOosbree earned a criteria decision over Donny Allaway of LeMars JV after going four overtime periods.

Chance Saathoff would be pinned in 5:07 by Austin Hoeft of Charles City in action at 132 to be eliminated and at 138, Caige Elbert was pinned in 1:19 by Rugby Sliger of Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock to also be eliminated.

Joe Schmidt would be eliminated from the tournament at 145 pounds as he was pinned in 1:12 by Austin Long of Algona.

In semi-final matches, Brett Steinkamp would earn a 1:35 fall over Brennan Doebel of Clear Lake at 113 pounds. Jake Miller would be pinned in 1:56 by Jake Niichel of Charles City in the 120 pound match, and at 126, Nick Merwald was pinned in 5:07 by Austin Hoeft of Charles City.

Nick Schany would earn a 12-5 decision victory over Zach Milks of Charles City in action at 170 and at 195, Austin McCartan scored a :57 win by fall over Derrick Heimer of Riceville/St. Ansgar. At 220, Taylor Wegner would earn a 2:32 win by fall over Tyler Putney of Forest City.

At 120, Jake Miller pinned Brandon Klaes of Riceville/St. Ansgar in 1:33 and at 126, Nick Merwald scored a 3:22 win by fall over Blake Jacobs of Forest City.

For the finals, Dillon VanOosbree was pinned in 3:21 by Jeremiah Colon of the Clear Lake JV to finish sixth at 106 pounds.

Jake Miller would pine Tristan Boehm of Forest City in 2:46 of their match at 120 to earn a third place finish and Nick ?Merwald scored a 1:29 win by fall over Spencer Orr of Clear Lake to finish third at 126 pounds for the E-Hawks.

Brett Steinkamp met Johnny Etherington of Charles City in the 113 pound championship match , but was pinned in 1:37 to finish as the runner -up for the E-Hawks.

At 170 pounds, Nick Schany wrestled Joe Teague of Algona and earned the championship with a 4-1 decision victory.

At 195 pounds, Austin McCartan scored a 4-0 decision victory over Luke Johnson of Charles City to win the championship and at 220 pounds, Taylor Wegner would come up short in a 3-2 decision loss to Skyler Hulshizer of Riceville/St. Ansgar to finish second for the E-Hawks.

Emmetsburg's wrestlers will return to dual action Thursday night, Jan. 10, when they play host to the Cougars of Manson Northwest Webster and the Titans of South Central Calhoun in a double dual at 6 p.m.
