WEST?BEND - A single vehicle mishap Wednesday, Dec. 26, claimed the life of a West Bend man. The Iowa State Patrol identified the victim as 72-year old Robert John Klepper of West Bend.
According to Trooper Kevin Krull of the Iowa State Patrol's District Six Offices in Spencer, the accident occurred at 2:10 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 26, on Second Street South adjacent to the West Bend-Mallard High School. Robert Klepper was driving a 2006 Ford Explorer eastbound on County Road B63 when his vehicle left the roadway for unknown reasons to the south side on the north side of the high school building,
As Klepper's vehicle left the roadway, it struck a utility pole owned by the City of West Bend. After colliding with the utility pole, Klepper's vehicle continued on in an easterly direction and struck landscaping timbers before coming to rest a short distance later.
Robert Klepper was transported to the Palo Alto County Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
The Iowa State Patrol was assisted at the accident scene hy the West Bend Fire Department, West Bend Ambulance, Palo Alto County Sheriff's Office, Emmetsburg Ambulance and Wickman's Towing of Emmetsburg.
The 2006 Ford driven by Klepper was termed a total loss. A telephone box on the utility pole, owned by Northwest Telephone Coop, sustained an estimated $200 in damages and the utility pole, owned by the City of West Bend, sustained an estimated $1,800 in damages.
An investigation of the accident is continuing.
