The Mexican custom of Luminarias symbolizes "Lighting the way for Christ." The custom is to line the sidewalks and/or driveways with paper bags or plastic milk jugs glowing with flickering candles.
Brian and Janis Campbell, who reside at 301 Harrison, started this tradition in Emmetsburg in 1993 and they encourage neighbors to light up Harrison Street from First Street to Ninth Street.
Harrison Street will be lighted again this year on Sunday, Dec. 23. The display will be lit at 6:30 p.m. for that one night.
"If everyone on Harrison Street does light their candles, it makes for a beautiful sight," said Janis Campbell. "We thank all the residents on Harrison for participating and we hope that Dec. 23 will be another successful evening of making Harrison Street glow."
