ESTHERVILLE - Emmetsburg's E-Hawk Junior Varsity cagers battled hard but came up short in a 55-43 decision at the hands of Estherville Lincoln Central in action Dec. 4.
The E-Hawks would trail 8-4 after a slow start in the first quarter, but stayed close to the Midgets to trail 25-20 at the intermission.
The second half of the contest saw Estherville Lincoln Central begin to pull away from Emmetsburg as the E-Hawks' shooting went cold. Good defense by the Midgets also helped them to take an 11-point, 44-33 lead over the E-Hawks to start the final quarter.
In the final quarter, the two teams traded buckets but Emmetsburg couldn't close the gap for the 55-43 final tally.
For the E-Hawks, Greg Wesley led the offense with 15 points and added five rebounds, while Zach Anderson and Brandon Elbert both scored six points and handed out three assists each. Joe Jackson added six points, while Jacob Kibbie and Luke Jackson both added four point efforts and Aaron Bird tallied two points in the effort.
Emmetsburg made just 19 of 41 from inside the arc, 46 percent, and one three pointer, while ELC made nine of 28 from the two and nine of 19 three pointers, 47 percent accuracy.
At the line, Emmetsburg made just two of seven attempts while the Midgets made 10 of their 12 opportunities.
ELC?out-rebounded the E-Hawks by a 28-13 advantage, while Emmetsburg made nine steals.
The loss drops Coach Phil Geelan's squad to 1-1 on the season.
