EAGLE?GROVE - After opening their mat season with a split on Thursday night, Emmetsburg's E-Hawks wrestled some strong competition in Saturday's Eagle Grove Invitational Tournament. The E-Hawks would earn a sixth place finish in the tournament, and crowned one champion at the end of the day.
Emmetsburg's Taylor Wegner would earn the 220 pound championship, with teammate Nick Merwald finishing second at 126 pounds. Jake Miller would earn a third place finish at 120 pounds, while Brett Steinkamp finished fourth in action at 113 pounds.
Also placing at Eagle Grove for the E-Hawks were Scott Wurzer finishing fifth at 170 pounds, while Dillon VanOosbree was sixth at 106 pounds; Chris VanHeuvelen finished sixth at 128 pounds; Wes Brennan took sixth at 182 pounds and Pat Brennan finished sixth at 285 pounds.
"We sent a very young and inexperienced squad out to a very difficult Eagle Grove tournament." noted Emmetsburg Head Coach Jared Pickett. "I was really pleased with our first round, I saw a lot of fight out of our younger kids, and a lot of hustling. As the tournament wore on, I thought our kids started to break down a little mentally and started giving away easy points and pins."
In action at 220 pounds, Taylor Wegner opened the day with a 1:22 win by fall over Cameron Bordeaux of the JV?All Stars. Wegner then pinned Charles Angell of Ballard in :31 and won the championship with a 4:20 win by fall over Caleb Hanson of Clarion-Goldfield.
Nick Merwald opened his day with a 3:03 win by fall over Damian Huffaker of the JV All Stars and then won a 6-4 decision over Derek Wright of Ballard in the semi-finals. For the championship at 126, Merwald met up with Jake Adams of Algona and lost a 7-1 decision to finish in second place for the E-Hawks.
At 120 pounds, Jake Miller opened the day with a 1:11 win by fall over Logan Huebsch of the JV?All Stars, but would lose a 5-9 decision to Joey Helgeson of Clarion-Goldfield in the semi-finals. Miller would come back to pin Louie Howlett of Ballard in 1:39 and then pinned Kole Evans of Fort Dodge in 1:57 to win third place honors.
In action at 113 pounds, Brett Steinkamp would be pinned in the opening round in 2:55 b Nic Ganzeveld of the JV All Stars, but Steinkamp drew a bye in the first round of the consolation bracket. Seinkamp then pinned Evan Ulven of Clarion-Goldfield in 3:53, but had to default by injury to Ganzeveld in the third place match and had to settle for the fourth place finish.
Scott Wurzer earned fifth place honors in action at 170 points as he started his day being pinned in :39 by Joe Teague of Algona, but Wurzer earned a forfeit from Michael Johnson of the JV?All Stars in the first round consolation match. Wurzer would be pinned by Jake Wigans of Clarion-Goldfield in 2:47 in the consolation semi, moving Wurzer to the fifth place match, where he earned a 1:25 win by fall over Andrew Rassmussen of Ballard.
At 106 pounds, Dillon VanOosbree lost a 15-2 major decision to Quentin Luke of Ballard in the opening round. VanOosbree then earned a 7-3 decision win over Lucas Lienemann of Clarion-Goldfield before being pinned by Alex Helmkamp of Ankeny in the consolation semi-finals.
VanOosbree then wrestled his first-round opponent, Quentin Luke of Ballard, who pinned the E-Hawks in 1:53 to give VanOosbree a sixth place finish.
Chris VanHeuvelen opened his day at 138 pounds with a bye, but in the semi-finals, he was pinned in :49 by Taylor Lehman of Clarion-Goldfield. VanHuevelen then was pinned by Jonah Egli of Fort Dodge in :50 to move into the fifth place match, where he lost a hard-fought match, being pinned in 5:52 by Dylan Huse of Eagle Grove to finish sixth.
Wes Brennan, wrestling at 182 pounds, was pinned in 1:09 of his first round match by Tyler Kyhl of Ballard, but drew a bye in the first round of the consolation round. Brennan then was pinned in :56 by Garrett Johnson of Algona and then faced Tyler Kyhl of Ballard again in the fifth place match, where he was pinned in :35 to finish sixth.
Pat Brennan, wrestling at 285 pounds, was pinned in :27 of the first round match with Chandler Holmes of Algona, and then earned a 2:48 win by fall over Derek Hammitt of Eagle Grove. Brennan then lost a 2:05 fall to Alex Silberstein of Ballard before being pinned in 1:06 by Trevor Pedersen of Clarion-Goldfield to finish sixth.
At 132 pounds, Chance Saathoff wrestled Mitchell Broer of Ballard in the first round and was pinned in 2:35 of the match. Saathoff then wrestled Jas Jamison of Eagle Grove in the first round of the consolation bracket but was pinned in 1:12 to be eliminated from the tournament.
Caige Elbert, wrestling at 145 pounds, lost a 5-2 decision in the first round to Austin Long of Algona. In the first round of consolation action was pinned by Matt Osborne of Fort Dodge in :37 to be eliminated from the tournament.
At 152 pounds, Joe Schmidt was pinned in :18 of the opening round match with Weston Shaw of Algona, and then met Cole Beecher of Eagle Grove, who pinned Schmidt in :08 to end the E-Hawk's tournament outing.
Keagan Barrett wrestled at 285 pounds for the JV?All Stars on Saturday, and was pinned in :40 in his first round match with Xavier Quigley of Ankeny before being eliminated from the tournament in the first round of consolation by being pinned in :29 by Trevor Pedersen of Clarion-Goldfield.
"I was extremely pleased in how Tayler Wegner responded from Thursday's match. He stayed in good position on top and didn't take as many bad shots. He's still learning how to wrestle at his new weight class and he will continue to improve as the season continues," Coach Pickett noted. "Nick Merwald and Jake Miller had good days as well. Both are building confidence in their offense and are starting to learn to separate themselves from their competition."
