E-Hawks Battle To The Wire For Season Opening Win

November 29, 2012
Dan Voigt , Emmetsburg News

Emmetsburg's E-Hawks opened their basketball season in wild fashion Tuesday night with a one-point, 57-56 win over the Indians of Pocahontas Area. The issue was not resolved until the final horn in a game that saw the E-Hawks trail for most of the contest.

With lone senior Jake Jackson joined by juniors Michael Pugh, Mike Myers, Austin Krause and Erik Drost to start the contest, the E-Hawks struggled to get shots to drop in the first half. The Indians enjoyed good outside shooting, and were able to take a 16-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The shooting woes continued in the second frame, with the E-Hawks seeing many of their shots bouncing off the rim, while the Indians were able to edge away, leading by as many as 11 points at one point before trailing 35-28 at the intermission.

But in the second half, Emmetsburg began to find its' offense. With good bench minutes from Brandon Elbert and Aaron Bird, the E-Hawks started to see their shots drop. The defense began to click, allowing Emmetsburg to cut the deficit to a digit at 43-42 when the third period ended.

In the final quarter, the battle continued, with the E-Hawks matching the Indians on scoring until 2:00 remained when Emmetsburg took their first lead of the contest.55-54. The Indians would then score with 1:14 to go to take a 56-55 lead, but Emmetsburg got a drive to the bucket from Jake Jackson to put the E-Hawks back on top with :14 to go in the game.

The Indians would get off a last second shot that banged off the backboard at the buzzer to give the E-Hawks the 57-56 win.

Erik Drost led Emmetsburg with 18 points, while Jake Jackson added 16 points. Michael Pugh chipped in 11 points, while Brandon Elbert added six points. Austin Krause dropped in four points and Mike Myers added two points.

The E-Hawks will travel to Estherville Lincoln Central on Tuesday, Dec. 4.
